Gymintimidation

Updated: Nov 22, 2024

“Gymtimidation” is a real thing!

Imagine stepping into a room full of people who seem to know the moves by heart— and you’re trying to remember what is an “Arnold Press”?, and you’re just trying to figure out where to stand. You might catch someone glancing your way, and suddenly, it feels like everyone’s noticing your every move. It’s a common experience for many newcomers or those getting back into fitness classes. That’s why, at Exhale Fitness & Nutrition, we focus on creating a welcoming, judgment-free atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable joining in, no matter their experience level.

It's completely normal to feel a bit intimidated when trying something new, especially something as public as the gym.  Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Those "fit" people you see were once beginners too.

Here are a few reasons why we might be naturally inclined to feel intimidated:

  1. Fear of the Unknown: When we're facing something new, especially something that involves judgment or comparison (like the gym), it's natural to feel a bit of anxiety. We don't know what to expect, and that can be scary.

  2. Social Comparison: We often compare ourselves to others, and this can lead to feelings of inadequacy. Seeing fit and confident people at the gym can make us feel like we don't measure up.

  3.

  4. Past Experiences: If we've had negative experiences in the past, like being bullied or feeling judged, those memories can make us more prone to feeling intimidated in similar situations.

  5. Self-Doubt: Sometimes, we simply doubt our own abilities. We might think we're not good enough, strong enough, or coordinated enough to handle the gym environment.

It's important to remember that these feelings are normal, and everyone experiences them to some degree. The key is to recognize these feelings and take steps to overcome them.

We're all just trying to get through this together. And remember, the only person you're competing with is the person you were yesterday.

Here are a few testimonials from people who had gymintimidation and how they started!

Joanne:

A recommendation on Facebook for Exhale Fitness led to a phone call with Nancy. Not having exercised either at home or in public for 5 years, I knew that it was time to take action. From our initial conversation I felt at ease with Nancy as she talked me through the various Exhale programs. Impressed with her fitness and nutritional knowledge along with her  understanding of what I was looking for and fun personality, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and join Exhale Fitness.   I started with one-on-one training to ease me into a fitness routine and improve my diet before moving on to attending classes. My apprehension for exercising with others was soon forgotten. The Exhale members could not have been more welcoming and supportive. They, along with Nancy, have created a warm and welcoming environment.

Exhale Fitness has been a one stop shop helping me on my path to staying healthy in mind and body (the occasional Abba song on the playlist also helps!).

Laura:

I had recently moved to Dodgeville and was looking for a fitness place that held classes. I have always did some form of organized fitness classes led by an instructor. I have tried the commercial fitness centers and do not like them.  I noticed Exhale's advertisement in the window of the business. It was in February, so the window display caught my eye. It took me until July to walk in the door for the 1st time. It was the fear of being new in town and not knowing anyone that took me so long.

Here I am, 1 1/2 yrs later and love it! Everyone is very nice and welcoming. The programs are for all fitness levels and you can take them at your own pace.  Individual fitness and nutrition coaching is offered with no 'sales' pressure. We are all there to support each other through our health journey. I'm so glad for the window display and the welcome I received when I walked in the 1st time.

When a new face comes to class, I make a point to smile and greet them because I know it is hard.

Here are a few tips:

  • Focus on Yourself: Remember that you're at the gym to improve your health and fitness. Don't worry about what others are doing or thinking.

  • Start Small: If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with small, manageable goals. As you gain confidence, you can gradually increase the intensity of your workouts.

  • Find a Supportive Community: Look for a gym with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You might even consider finding a workout buddy to help you stay motivated.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes, and it's okay to feel intimidated sometimes.

  • Start Virtual with Exhale Fitness & Nutrition:  This is a good way to see what classes are like and to do a few before you actually walk into the gym.  Click here to see the class schedule. https://exhalefitness.club/classes
